Eugene Blackwood is a second lieutenant in the Royal Marines, presently doing duty in Portsmouth after a successful period of duty at sea with HMS Cerberus, 32. He is the brother of Benjamin, William, and Anne Blackwood. He is an NPC belonging to Keiju. His PB is James Norton.

Appearance[]

Of his brothers, he is physically the largest, though not by much. He has his father's lighter hair and neat features but in bearing and stature, decidedly resembles his mother. His choice of service has rather happily removed the necessity of maintaining an extensive wardrobe, and he considers that he looks quite dashing in his uniform. Life at sea has clearly agreed with him. He has grown another inch and appears much more self-assured in his deportment. His sister Anne declares him to seem the very picture of an officer and a gentleman, which naturally pleases him greatly.

Personality[]

Uniquely of his siblings, Eugene is unconcerned with advancing his station or fortunes. He stands no chance of inheriting and spurns the rigid sense of familial duty to which his father adheres. The latter is not to suggest that he is careless of his family but rather that he feels no pressing obligation to do his part to sacrifice his youth, energy, and interests for the good of the family. Such things are for the eldest son but with Benjamin away with the army, having initially obliged Sir Robert in that respect, the burden of responsibility falls upon William and, wanting no part of it himself, Eugene made his rebellion and used his uncle's influence to obtain a commission in the Royal Marines.

He is closest to his sister Anne, with whom he shares regular correspondence. It does frustrate him that his father has scorned him just as fully as he has Benjamin and this is a familiar theme in his letters. He doesn't consider that his disinterest in family duty should merit such poor treatment. Neither does he recognise the inherent selfishness of his choice of lifestyle. Unlike Benjamin, however, Eugene does make an effort to remain in contact with his mother and on occasion writes also to his father, though the latter never troubles himself to reply.
